Les supports Equal Representation in Arbitration for Women

By July 14, 2016 No Comments

Les Schiefelbein has joined members of the international arbitration community in a pledge to take action to increase the number of women appointed to international arbitration panels.  The Equal Representation in Arbitration Pledge which launched in May in London has hundreds of signatories, including a growing list of law firms, companies, arbitration institutions and arbitrators.  Institutional signatories include the Silicon Valley Arbitration and Mediation Center, the London Court of International Arbitration, the ICC International Court of Arbitration and the International Centre for Dispute Resolution.

Schiefelbein stated “that a immediate opportunity to effect the pledge for independent arbitrators like myself is to consider and appoint women as the chair or president of the arbitration panel when the dispute resolution provision calls for the party arbitrators to select the chairperson.”   Schiefelbein continued “I have seen firsthand with my own four daughters, with women I selected as outside counsel and appointed as party arbitrators and in the talented legal team that I led in my corporate career which included as many women as men, that women are critical thinkers whose diverse viewpoints help craft sophisticated and correct legal solutions–the same will be for women serving as arbitrators.”
